Considerato ovunque uno dei più importanti musicisti al mondo, Toots Thielemans come jazzista, è stato capace, con le sue parole, a far vivere quel suo piccolo strumento musicale (l’armonica a bocca) in quel breve spazio compreso tra una lacrima e un sorriso.

Da quel giorno in cui, durante l’occupazione belga della Germania, si è innamorato del jazz ascoltando la musica di Louis Armstrong, non c’è stato un momento della sua vita che non lui non abbia dedicato alla musica afro americana. Dopo il suo primo tour europeo con Benny Goodman, Thielemans dà inizio a collaborazioni prestigiose, tra cui possiamo citare quelle con: Charlie Parker, George Shearing, Ella Fitzgerald, Quincy Jones, Bill Evans, Jaco Pastorius, Natalie Cole, Pat Metheny, e poi, più avanti, con Paul Simon o Billy Joel. Anche il cinema gli si è avvicinato, e la sua musica enfatizza le sequenze di numerosi film, quali: Midnight Cowboy, Round Midnight, The Getaway, Sugarland Express, Cinderella Liberty, Turks Fruit,  Jean de Florette.

I can say without hesitation that Toots is one of the greatest musicians of our time. On his instrument he ranks with the best that jazz has ever produced. he goes for the heart and makes you cry. We have worked together more times than I can count and he always keeps me coming back for more ...
